Pilot Passport, Mobile App Gamification
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA)
AOPA is a non-profit organization representing the largest aviation community in the world. Though they boast an active member community, AOPA wanted to grow their pipeline with a younger demographic.
AOPA’s mobile app is a destination for pilots and aviation enthusiasts to find the latest flight information and industry news. AOPA tasked Ascedia with taking the app to the next level by adding gamification capabilities that aligned with a younger audience’s interests and behaviors.
Following a check-in model—think FourSquare exclusively for pilots—Pilot Passport offered the following capabilities within the AOPA Android and iOS app.
Check-ins and social sharing
Add a photo, provide a rating, leave a comment, and share a post on social media
“Find Places to Fly”
Search by city, state, airport name, or airport identifier to pull up a radius of airports. It can be filtered all the way down to airport amenities.
Points Values and Digital Badges
Users earn points toward badges that are displayed on their profiles for a little friendly competition
In just one month from launch, Pilot Passport saw following results. The initial success is testament to AOPA’s active community—but also to Ascedia’s smooth UX design and development that allowed users to take off without a hitch.
