An Amazing Aircraft App

The Aircraft Owners and Pilot’s Association (AOPA) represents the largest aviation community in the world. With hundreds of thousands of members across the globe, AOPA strives to protect and strengthen general aviation through education, training and advocacy. AOPA offered a set of flight tools and apps to support their members, but wanted to create a new app to support the membership organization by providing evergreen content and useful information.

Members-Only Content

AOPA had devised the concept for their members-only app prior to reaching out to Ascedia. The goal of the app was to provide a space for AOPA’s members to connect and engage with a variety of content, including events calendars, news stories, videos and podcasts.

Their in-house design team had begun work on the look and feel of the app but the team needed development support to bring their vision to life. As part of the strategic planning process, Ascedia’s UX experts made recommendations to enhance the structure of the app and create a cohesive user experience.

One Code Base, Multiple Platforms

Ascedia recommended connecting to Sitecore to maximize content management capabilities and developed a custom API to allow data to flow between the two systems. This supported the app’s security features and infrastructure, enabled sorting and filtering, and allowed rich content to be created once but used on both the AOPA website and in the app.

Ascedia’s team used Cordova to develop the app, which allowed AOPA to target multiple platforms (iOS and Android) with a single code base and streamlined the development and launch process. The team provided guidance on how best to implement specific features and made recommendations to ensure the app was user-friendly and accessible. Ascedia’s experts also advised AOPA’s team on the app submission process, and our familiarity with the ins and outs of the process helped AOPA quickly gain approvals for launch.

Steadily Growing Results

The AOPA app allows users to swipe through slideshows, watch AOPA Live® video segments, read articles and listen to four different podcast series. Users can manage their membership and connect with AOPA staff via chat. Pilots also receive temporary flight restriction alerts via the app based on device location.

The AOPA app launched in July 2017 in advance of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh event. AOPA was able to demo the app at this event and encourage members to download it on-site.

In the first weeks after launch, AOPA amassed nearly 2,500 downloads. Through continued promotion via member communications, social media posts, and public relations efforts, downloads continue to steadily grow.
