What makes Ascedia special? Our people! Every week, we'll introduce you to a member of our team so you can get to know us a little better.
NAME AND TITLE
Nate York -- Senior Interface Developer
MY TYPICAL WORKDAY
I think a lot. I write code. I doodle. I make sites look pretty and behave nicely. I push pixels around. I obsess over details. I organize everything. I ingest as much music as possible. I constantly learn.
HOW I CHOSE MY CAREER PATH
I’m fairly sure it chose me; I didn’t necessarily plan it out or go to school for it. I’ve been more or less connected since I was 10, dialing into BBS’s in the early 90’s, later helping run and create ANSI art for them. After high school, I worked for a local ISP and got free hosting space to play with as a perk, which lead to learning the basics of programming and how the web worked. I’ve since run numerous forums and websites for music communities and projects, spent years curating and marketing my own music events in Milwaukee (which demands design, marketing and web knowledge to be successful), and later co-founded a small side venture, focusing on digital marketing services for event promoters and musicians across the country. After all of that, I was finally convinced that I should probably be doing web development and design as my actual job.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ASCEDIA
A good friend working here at the time told me about Ascedia and pushed me to give him my resume to pass along so I could start doing this web thing for real. I was worried I didn’t have all the right skills but decided to try, and Ascedia gave me a shot. I quickly fell in love with the easy going but hard working atmosphere, the strong sense of family, the insane amount of inspiration floating around, all of the opportunities to learn and grow, and the daily challenges of each project. The biggest takeaway for me, however, is how much Ascedia has cared and continuously guides me in becoming a stronger developer, a better team player, a better thinker and a better person overall.
HIGH SCHOOL MASCOT
BEST PIECE OF CAREER/PROFESSIONAL ADVICE I'VE RECEIVED
Never stop learning.
FAVORITE MILWAUKEE HANGOUT
Lots of things have changed since I moved to Colorado, so a lot of my old hangouts have changed or cease to exist, but I never tire of visiting my old neighborhood in Bay View and experiencing how much it’s evolved over the years.
LAST BOOK READ
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
I have an awesome wife who’s way cooler than I am, a super smart and nerdy 9-year-old boy who’s training himself to take my job, a hyper dog and a really big, really mouthy cat. I have a brother out in Seattle, and my parents are back home in Wisconsin.
WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME
Exploring Colorado, mixing records, drawing and reading.
I can wiggle my ears (high five, Anne!)
MOST MEANINGFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT
I have two that are equally important to me. First is getting to where I am now in my career without taking the traditional routes (college) to hone my skills. I’m proud and thankful every day to have been able to learn what I have how I have, and to have been granted the chances to prove myself along the way. The second is transplanting my family to Colorado; it was the one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. As hard as it is to leave family, friends and comfort behind, it’s been rewarding beyond measure and I would do it again (and you should too, if you’re thinking about it!).
