NAME AND TITLE

Joe Marty -- Application Developer

MY TYPICAL WORKDAY

Come into work still half asleep. Drink coffee. Code. Drink more coffee. Code more. Attend some meetings. Code more. Cry under my desk when I can’t figure something out that seems easy. Recover. Code more. Do a barrel roll when I get those issues figured out. Go home.

HOW I CHOSE MY CAREER PATH

I took some programming classes in high school and ended up really enjoying it, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it for a living. After going to school for construction (I know, construction to software developer. I’m weird) and graduating when the housing market took the nose dive, I worked in retail for a number of years before realizing that I can’t do that for the rest of my life. So I went back to school for software dev and now wish I did that from the beginning.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ASCEDIA

I don’t really have one favorite thing, so here are a few:

  • I am challenged every day with the projects that I work on. That always helps me think about how I should be coding everything instead of just going through the motions.
  • Having a great work-life balance.
  • The people that I work with are phenomenal. We all care about helping everyone else out and sharing our knowledge even if we are on different teams.

EDUCATION

B.S. Computer Science – Carroll University

HIGH SCHOOL MASCOT

Warrior

FIRST JOB

Oven boy for a local pizza place

BEST PIECE OF CAREER/PROFESSIONAL ADVICE I'VE RECEIVED

There is always money in the banana stand.

PERSONAL HERO

My mom. She had to raise 3 boys and a step son, and one of them (you can probably guess who…) was not the easiest teenager to deal with. She went back to pharmacy school when I was very young which I know was tough on her. She is a survivor of both breast and thyroid cancer and had go through her husband of 30+ years passing away.

FAVORITE MILWAUKEE HANGOUT

Veterans Park, Sugar Maple, Boone and Crocket, Johnny Hammers (best wings in the city hands down)

LAST BOOK READ

If we go by physically reading a book: book 5 of the Wheel of Time series (Lord of Chaos). The actual last book that I have consumed because audiobooks rock my world: The Count of Monte Christo.

PERSON I'D MOST LIKE TO MEET (LIVING OR DEAD)

Teddy Roosevelt. He seems like the kind of person that would have a few glasses of whiskey with you, then wrestle a bear in the woods afterwards.

FAMILY

3 older brothers with 3 nieces and 6 nephews and a very high-energy dog

WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME

I like to find a different trails around the parks and outlying areas and take my dog on a hike through them. I also brew beer with a friend of mine or just go out with a bunch of people going to the different festivals. If none of those things are happening then just turn on Netflix and turn into a zombie on my couch for hours on end.

SECRET TALENT

Air Smithing. Better if you don’t ask… Also, pottery.

MOST MEANINGFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT

I would say being able to buy my house at the age of 24, and having my dad be able to see that before he passed away a year later. Also watching all of my aforementioned nieces and nephews at once and only crying in the corner twice.
