NAME AND TITLE
Mark Roller -- Partner
MY TYPICAL WORKDAY
Either wild or calm, one deep task, or many many shallow tasks. 0 typical.
HOW I CHOSE MY CAREER PATH
I'm a jack of many trades and need the variety and constant challenges. I loved how visuals, photography and programming met as the web, which offers limitless opportunities and pressure to learn.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ASCEDIA
Solving challenges with multi-talented people is fun. Every day is an opportunity to learn. Less politics than working for a corporation or other agencies (generally!)
Unfinished business law degree, Bachelors in Fine Arts in Photography, with piles of related computer science credits and self-education in our field
HIGH SCHOOL MASCOT
One was a demon, one was a panther. A demon panther.
Hardee's, a shitty job making $2.90/hr. Kept me well away from customers - in the kitchen. Wore a brown polyester plaid outfit, deep fry greasy hair, zits... looked and felt like a jackass.
BEST PIECE OF CAREER/PROFESSIONAL ADVICE I'VE RECEIVED
Your home can be taken away, all your money, everything you have, your family, you can lose everything. The one thing that can never be taken away from you is your education. With an education you can survive. Learn. (Grandpa Albert would tell me that a lot with varying degree of emotion. He was "sold" and sent off by his family to be an indentured worker at 14 on a farm in order to feed his mother and siblings. Immigrant to USA. Nearly died working a coal mine in PA. No formal education. Self made. Rough life.)
James Dean, man... he made great sausage...
FAVORITE MILWAUKEE HANGOUT
The entire east side on a Sunday morning. You can have it all to yourself, it's quiet, the air is sweet from the lake. Brings back a lot of comforting memories.
LAST BOOK READ
I used to read a lot of science fiction & dystopian novels (Phillip K Dick!!!) but I haven't read any fiction in a while. I have read a lot of technical manuals lately, which sounds really boring, is bad for the imagination. The latest was Make: Analog Synthesizers: Make Electronic Sounds the Synth-DIY Way.
PERSON I'D MOST LIKE TO MEET (LIVING OR DEAD)
Alive: Bill Murray. He seems like a great guy.
Wife (met in '92), 13YO, 11YO, 7YO, Duffy, Brownie
WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME
Winter: At the basement workbench | Spring: In the garden | Summer: Outdoors, camping | Fall: Harvesting, drinking, eating
I can move several toes independently of each other, like a primate. It's strange.
MOST MEANINGFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT
Bringing life into the world, being a parent. It's challenging, rewarding, happy, sad, selfless, selfish, boring, exciting all at the same time. It makes me strive to be a better human being.
