What makes Ascedia special? Our people! Every week, we'll introduce you to a member of our team so you can get to know us a little better.
NAME AND TITLE
Emily Hughes -- Application Developer
MY TYPICAL WORKDAY
It varies depending on my current projects and what stage they are in. I might be quoting out hours, building recommendations for data structure, or planning out implementation. The majority of my time, though, is spent writing code.
HOW I CHOSE MY CAREER PATH
When I was little, I was told that programming is like getting paid to solve crossword puzzles for a living. That turned out not to be quite true -- the puzzles I get to solve are way more fun and interesting than crossword puzzles! I love the problem-solving that I get to do every day. Another reason is that I have always enjoyed learning new things, especially new systems of any sort. Part of being a developer is that you need to be constantly learning, because the field is always evolving. I find this really appealing, because it means I'll never run out of new things to learn.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ASCEDIA
What attracted me to Ascedia, and my favorite part of working here, would be the culture and the people. Ascedia has a great atmosphere of support, positivity, and collaboration.
I graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a BS in Computer Science, and a BA in Art.
HIGH SCHOOL MASCOT
A guy on a horse. Grade school mascot: also a guy on a horse.
BEST PIECE OF CAREER/PROFESSIONAL ADVICE I'VE RECEIVED
Do what you love. You spend a lot of time at work, so you should enjoy what you do.
FAVORITE MILWAUKEE HANGOUT
LAST BOOK READ
The sourcebook for Fiasco, a cinematic tabletop RPG about "ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control." It's basically a game where you all make up a Coen-Brothers-esque movie on the fly. Everything goes terribly wrong. It's very funny.
PERSON I'D MOST LIKE TO MEET (LIVING OR DEAD)
Celebrating 7 years married to my husband, Matt (who is also a developer). Family is important to us, and we try to visit our parents and siblings often. I have two sisters, a host of in-laws, and two infant nieces.
WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME
I like playing games: board games, tabletop RPGs, and video games (especially indie games). I listen to a long list of podcasts. I also enjoy making things.
I can count to 1023 on my fingers.
MOST MEANINGFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT
The professional accomplishment I am the most proud of is a product configurator tool built for Sub-Zero and Wolf. This tool allows a user to arrange appliances on a wall, and then dynamically generates all of the calculations needed to install those products in that configuration, a dynamic to-scale SVG diagram and a number of other specifications. This was an exciting project to work on, both because it was technically challenging, and because it is a useful tool that saves time and makes peoples' lives easier.
