What makes Ascedia special? Our people! Every week, we'll introduce you to a member of our team so you can get to know us a little better.

NAME AND TITLE

Gordon Kessler, Jr. -- Senior Application Developer

MY TYPICAL WORKDAY

I have a Groundhog’s Day-esque morning that begins with trying to get up and ready before my two-year-old son. I then polish my skills in conflict resolution by navigating my son through a series of decisions which will ultimately lead him to decide he wants to go to daycare. Depending on how much coffee my wife makes / leaves me, I take around two cups of coffee to work in the morning. Once I get to work, I have more coffee and try my best to get heads-down on whatever work I have for the day.

HOW I CHOSE MY CAREER PATH

I’ve tried everything else.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ASCEDIA

Work/Life balance. My fellow Ascedians. The people who make up Ascedia are an eclectic bunch and I think that’s what gives rise to the excellent work culture.

EDUCATION

B.S. in Computer Science from the esteemed University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

HIGH SCHOOL MASCOT

Viking

FIRST JOB

Harvester and Quality Assurance Associate for local perennial fragaria × ananassa system

BEST PIECE OF CAREER/PROFESSIONAL ADVICE I'VE RECEIVED

“You should apply at Ascedia.” JK, though that was definitely a good move. It’s not important to know everything, it’s important to know how to find what you need to know.

PERSONAL HERO

My mother has been an inspiration to me my whole life. She came to the US from the Philippines to make a great life for herself and her family. My mom and dad had supported our family in the Philippines by sending money back for medicine, food, and Christmas gifts. When I was 4, we went to the Philippines so my parents could build a house for our family there. Now, 30 years later, almost all of my aunts and uncles are here in the US on work Visas along with their families. My mom and step dad help to get the family established with work and school. They even went to the Philippines recently to support the family catering business. I’m proud of my mom and all she has accomplished. I love you mom!

FAVORITE MILWAUKEE HANGOUT

There are so many. I don’t get out and about as much as I used to in college, but I recommend anywhere on the East Side. If you should find yourself at Wolski’s and Bernie is behind the bar, ask him for a Maker’s Mark Manhattan sweet.

FAMILY

Yes, they’re the best! My lovely wife, Laura, has been my greatest champion and supporter. She keeps me focused and grounded, especially as time seems to come at a premium these days. My son helps me to prioritize my time. He reminds me that whatever I have going on can wait until after we read one more book or build one more house of blocks.

WHAT I DO IN MY SPARE TIME

My favorite thing to do in my spare time is spend time with my family.

SECRET TALENT

I am really funny. Just ask my two-year-old.

MOST MEANINGFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT

I was the first in my family to graduate from college with a four-year degree. I owe much of that accomplishment to the support of my wife.
